La Tomatina is the world’s biggest food fight. The origin of the festival is when people attacked the government with tomatoes in an event. Then it became a tradition in Spain
Every year, the festival is held on the last Wednesday of August in Bunol. People come from all over the world. They throw tomatoes to each other in the fight.
In this festival, there are more than 100 tons of tomatoes that are used on the streets. Many trucks carry tomatoes into the center of the town. The tomatoes come from Extremadura, where they are very cheap.
In the fight, tomatoes must be squashed to avoid injuries. Sometimes, there is a conflict in the festival. So, everyone does not bring glass bottles.
In the early Wednesday morning, to prepare for the near event, all stores in the town must cover windows and doors.
At 11 a.m, meat is put on the top of a pole. The festival can begin when someone bring meat down.
After an hour, the fight ends. No more tomatoes can be thrown. In cleaning process, people use fire trucks to spray down the streets. During the week of the festival, there are many activities like music concerts, dancing and fireworks. This festival attracts about 20,000 people every year.
